What is root canal?
Root canal treatment is carried out when an infection in the tooth or surrounding soft tissue has reached the nerves of the tooth. It is an alternative to extracting a tooth and allows patients to preserve their teeth, even if there has been extensive decay.
Symptoms of an infection
An infection in the center of the tooth is caused by bacteria that invades the tooth. This often happens after tooth decay, but can also be caused by broken fillings or damage to teeth.
Symptoms include:
- Pain when eating or drinking hot or cold food
- Pain when biting or chewing
- A loose tooth
- Swelling of the gum or an abscess
- Pus oozing from the affected tooth
- A swollen cheek or jaw
- Tooth darkening
It is important to reach out to one of our dental care team if you’re having any of these symptoms, as leaving the infection could make it worse and lead to complications.
Your root canal treatment
We ensure you are under local anaesthetic and then remove the nerves within the tooth, which are contained within the canals.
We take time to clean out and disinfect these canals to then obturate or fill roots and make them sterile. A root filling is a way of keeping a tooth, once the live part (the pulp) has become irreversibly damaged.
Once this has been done, a crown or filling is placed on the tooth to help protect the tooth long term and prevent fracture.
Root canal aftercare
Although the procedure is relatively pain free, it’s common to feel sore for a few days. This is a normal reaction to the treatment as your body repairs the removed tissue.
You can take over the counter painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen to relieve any pain, and use a cold compress to reduce any swelling. You should return to normality within a week. If any pain or swelling continues after 7 days, please consult us.

I decided I wanted some private dental work and chose Magnolia House... and I am very glad I did.. All the staff are very friendly. I was booked in with Abbas. He listened to my concerns about an ongoing minor gum problem and he went above and beyond to match the colour correctly of a top front tooth veneer... Nothing is too much trouble. I am really happy with my new natural looking veneer and already made another appointment for some more 'prettyfication' of another front tooth. Definitely recommend Abbas and his team.

I have been going to this dentist practice since I was a child, and despite being frightened of the dentist initially I have always been very well looked after and now no longer have that fear. Recently I decided that I wanted to address the appearance of my teeth. They have always been discoloured and yellow and I have been very embarrassed about them, never smiling in a photo. I went through the teeth whitening process and then had some fillings replaced to match the new colour of my teeth. I went to Disneyworld, the holiday of a life time! And I smiled in all the photos, a big toothy grin, for the first time in 15 years! Cannot thank Abbas and his team enough for helping me regain some confidence!

After struggling for five years (!) to find a dentist in/around Portsmouth and having to travel over an hour away I was able to register with Magnolia House and was seen by Lisa and Poppy who instantly put me at ease after being very nervous. They outlined all of my options and couldn’t have been kinder. They made me feel so welcome and are an absolute credit to the team. The reception team are wonderful and efficient and make for such a nice experience. Thank you so much!
