Emergency dentistry FAQs

Can you help with broken or chipped teeth?

Yes. If you have broken or chipped a tooth, keep any pieces and bring them with you. Depending on the damage, we may repair it with a filling, crown, or bonding.

What should I do if I have a dental abscess?

A dental abscess is an infection that can cause swelling and severe pain. You should not ignore it. Call us as soon as possible so we can treat the infection and relieve the pain. In the meantime, painkillers such as ibuprofen can help (if you can take them safely).

Do you see both registered and new patients for emergencies?

Yes. We welcome both our registered patients and new patients who need urgent dental care in Portsmouth and Havant.

How much does an emergency appointment cost?

Our emergency consultation fee is £50, plus the cost of any treatment needed (such as fillings, antibiotics, or temporary repairs). We will always explain the options and costs before starting treatment.

What if I have a dental emergency outside of opening hours?

If you have an urgent dental problem when we are closed, call our practice number and follow the instructions. You may be directed to an out-of-hours NHS emergency service or offered the next available appointment with us.

Can you prescribe antibiotics for tooth infections?

Yes. If an infection is diagnosed, our dentists can prescribe antibiotics when appropriate. This will usually be combined with treatment to remove the source of infection.
