Root canal treament

Root canal treatment is required when infection reaches the internal pulp tissues and nerves inside a tooth. This effective intervention is able to save and restore the tooth, preventing the need for it to be extracted.

Symptoms of an infection

Infection within a tooth can be extremely painful and is caused by bacteria invading the inner root canals. This often happens after tooth decay, but can also be caused by broken fillings or other damage. Common signs of internally infected teeth are:

It is important to reach out to one of our dental care team if you’re having any of these symptoms, as leaving the infection could make it worse and lead to complications.

Treatment & aftercare

Your root canal treatment

We first ensure that you are under local anaesthetic before creating an opening in the top of the tooth. From here we can remove the nerves and internal tissues contained within the root canals.

We take time to clean out and disinfect these canals to make them sterile. They are then filled with a special replacement material ans sealed.

Once this has been done, a crown can be placed over the tooth to help strengthen and protect it.

Root canal aftercare

Although the procedure is relatively pain free, it’s common to feel sore for a few days. This is a normal reaction to the treatment as your body repairs the removed tissue.

You can take over the counter painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen to relieve the pain, and use a cold compress to reduce any swelling.

You should return to normality within a week. If any pain or swelling continues after seven days, please consult us.
