It’s generally not advisable to get dental implants if you have active gum disease. Gum disease, or periodontal disease, can lead to complications such as peri-implantitis, which affects the soft tissue around the implants and can cause further bone loss.
Before proceeding with dental implants, it’s crucial to treat any existing gum disease to ensure a healthy mouth environment and increase the chances of successful implant integration. Our dentist will evaluate your oral health and may recommend treating the gum disease first before moving forward with the implant procedure.
The crucial phase, called osseointegration, is when the bone fuses with the implant. This usually takes about 3 to 6 months. After this, placing a crown or bridge can take an additional few weeks.
While the entire process may take several months, most patients feel comfortable and can return to normal activities within a few days after surgery.
