Expert tooth extractions in Hampshire

A tooth extraction is the careful removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. While we always strive to preserve natural teeth wherever possible, there are circumstances where extraction is the safest and most appropriate course of action (for example, when a tooth is severely decayed, badly damaged, infected, or causing overcrowding).

Non-surgical extractions

These are performed when the tooth in question is fully erupted and visible above the gum line. Using a local anaesthetic to ensure you feel no pain, the dentist gently loosens the tooth using specialist instruments before removing it. The procedure is typically straightforward and quick.

Surgical extractions

These are required when the affected tooth has broken at the gum line, has not fully erupted, or has curved or complex roots. This type of extraction involves a small incision in the gum and, in some cases, the careful sectioning of the tooth to allow removal. Although the procedure sounds more involved, patients are kept completely comfortable throughout with local anaesthesia.

Wisdom tooth removal

This is one of the most common oral surgery procedures we carry out. Wisdom teeth (the third molars at the back of your mouth) often erupt at an angle, become impacted (trapped beneath the gum or against adjacent teeth), or cause crowding and infection. Our team will take digital X-rays to assess the position of your wisdom teeth before recommending the most appropriate course of treatment.

Aftercare following your extraction

Good aftercare after a tooth extraction is important for a smooth and comfortable recovery. Most patients heal fully within 7–10 days.

Oral surgery FAQs

Will a tooth extraction be painful?

No. Before the procedure begins, we will administer a local anaesthetic to numb the area completely. You may feel some pressure or movement, but you should not feel any pain during the extraction. If you do feel discomfort at any point, let your dentist know and they will apply more anaesthetic. After the procedure, some mild soreness and swelling is normal and can be managed easily with over-the-counter pain relief.

How do I know if I need a surgical or non-surgical extraction?

This depends on the position, condition, and root structure of the tooth. Your dentist will take X-rays during your consultation to assess the tooth and will recommend the most appropriate approach. Simple extractions are suitable for teeth that are fully visible and intact, while surgical extractions are needed for impacted teeth, broken teeth, or those with complex roots.

How long does wisdom tooth removal take?

The procedure itself usually takes between 20 and 60 minutes depending on the complexity of the case. A straightforward wisdom tooth extraction may take just 20–30 minutes, while a surgical removal of an impacted tooth may take a little longer. Your dentist will give you a clear idea of what to expect at your consultation.

Is there anything I should do to prepare before my extraction?

It is a good idea to eat a light meal a few hours before your appointment, as the local anaesthetic may make eating difficult immediately afterwards. Inform your dentist of any medications you are taking, including blood thinners, and let us know if you have any medical conditions that may affect your treatment. If you are feeling particularly anxious, please do tell us: we are experienced in treating nervous patients and can discuss additional options to help you feel comfortable.

What is dry socket, and how can I avoid it?

Dry socket (alveolar osteitis) is a temporary but uncomfortable condition that can occur when the blood clot that forms in the extraction socket becomes dislodged or dissolves before the wound has healed. It can cause significant pain radiating to the jaw or ear. To reduce your risk, avoid smoking, drinking through straws, rinsing forcefully, or any activity that creates suction in the mouth for at least 48 hours after your extraction. If you think you may have dry socket, contact us promptly!

How long does it take to recover from a tooth extraction?

For a simple extraction, most patients feel back to normal within a few days. Surgical extractions and wisdom tooth removals typically involve a slightly longer recovery of 7–10 days. Swelling and discomfort are usually at their peak in the first 48 hours and then improve steadily. Full healing of the socket beneath the gum can take several weeks, though you are unlikely to notice this.

What are my options for replacing the extracted tooth?

Once your mouth has fully healed, we can discuss tooth replacement options to restore your smile and prevent the remaining teeth from shifting. At Magnolia House, we offer dental implants, bridges, and dentures. Your dentist will help you understand which solution best suits your clinical needs, lifestyle, and budget.
